ZERO HARM
Putting safety first
Safety has the highest priority for both our company and the work we do. It is the reason why we guarantee to take work safety and the protection of our environment into account right from the start in the planning and design of all our systems and processes. We also see it as a matter of principle to commit ourselves in particular to the safety of our clients, our employees, and transport service users.
Our occupational safety management system is based on the safety and health protection concepts of our parent company Balfour Beatty plc. in England and also on the occupational safety guidelines SHEQ 1 to 11 of the Balfour Beatty Rail division. It is applied in the implementation and successful original certification of the international SCC** standard since 2002 and of the international specification OHSAS 18001 since 2003.
Working safely calls for determination and a clear commitment to the responsibility for the health and well being of our employees and of all those affected by our work. In 2002, in anticipation of OHSAS, we introduced the 5 point program for occupational safety:
- Safety First! (Safety organisation with decentralised task definition)
- Safety by Knowledge! (Training and further education programs)
- Safety in Mind! (Visualisation of issues, Introduction of interdisciplinary and specialised work groups)
- Safety in Process! (Identification of safety hazards and workplace analysis)
- Safety Together! (Multiple-interface contacts with customers and competitors in order to correspond to modified basic conditions)
- In 2007 we have extended the program to the broader sense of quality:
- Behaviour and consciousness
- Technical solutions and improvements
- Workplace related management systems for Quality, Safety, Health and Environment.
- Improvement of processes and procedures
Our objective - accident-free business
Our number of accidents has been steadily declining since 2001. To help all our employees and clients keep in mind the many initiatives we have taken for the continuous development of our processes, we summarized these success components in a brochure (only available in German) in 2006. These standards form the basis for continuous improvement: We will not accept any deadly accident or any accident leading to permanent disability! The way we increasingly manage to avoid accidents and incidents is to apply the conclusions from detailed investigations of all incidents and to put them into practice without delay.
Accidents can happen as long as people perform work. We cannot accept this. We must learn from them in order to prevent the causes or to minimize the consequences.
We are aware of and fulfil legal compliance and standards and, furthermore, we lay claim to being a leading and exemplary enterprise in our line of business due to our preventative measures for promoting occupational safety and health protection.
