Converter station in Aschaffenburg

08 of May 2010

The consortium comprising Converteam and Balfour Beatty Rail is setting up a static transformer unit with a 60MW capacity at the Aschaffenburg sub-station as part of DB Energie's major "Ongoing Optimization of Traction Current Generating Facilities" investment programme.

A new modular design static transformer unit is currently being built in Mainaschaff near Aschaffenburg for the generation of the current required by the railways’ 110kV high-voltage network with a frequency of 16.7Hz. Based on a DB Energie GmbH functional tender all services such as planning, installation and commissioning operations through to the conclusion of the trail run are being carried out as a joint Converteam GmbH and Balfour Beatty Rail GmbH project.
The transformer technology is being supplied by Converteam in Berlin where the subsequent extension of the building sections is being carried out directly by Balfour Beatty Rail.  Works began in March 2009.
Once commissioned in November 2009, the transformer unit will be the main current supply for the traction current stations in Northern Bavaria and in the Rhine-Main region.
